Designer of the Day – Veronique Branquinho

I haven’t done a “Designer of the Day” post since my first (featuring Costello Tagliapietra) so it’s high time I wrote another!

Lately, I have been lusting over Belgian designer, Veronique Branquinho. She may not be as well known as her Belgian counterparts Ann Demeulemeester, Dries van Noten, Martin Margiela, Raf Simons and Kris Van Assche (to name but a few of the prodigiously talented Belgian-born!), but that is because Veronique Branquinho relies on quiet statements and is devoid of embellishment and pomp. Described as making “desirable clothes that don’t overtake their wearer“, her designs are at once elegant and wearable, with a hint of strength and masculinity.

Her aesthetic has been described as “effortless understated chic”. Whilst I always consider my tastes veer towards the ultra-feminine, I absolutely ascribe to the Veronique Branquinho way of dressing. She favours louche trousers and loose blouses, block colours and easy-care fabrics, a dishevelled, insouciant elegance, tailored jackets that are never too-tight and timeless dresses. This season, I am loving (above all her other seasons) her Resort 2014 collection. I mean, if I could spend the rest of autumn in these clothes, I would not be unhappy!!!

People are frightened to wear white or cream for fear they will look bigger but I think neutral hues as those are so slimming! My favourite summer dresses are white, a cropped ivory or cream jacket goes with literally everything and is there anything more chic that a high-waisted, wide-leg pair of white cotton pants (how very Mediterranean)??!!??

Veronique Branquinho works with a lot of neutrals – take the Fall 2013 collection, which was exclusively iterations of camel, taupe, yellow, beige and black.

I am entirely in love with this burgundy suit from Pre-Fall 2014

and with this liquid peachy-gold dress from Spring 2013.

And do you see how everything is so simple and without fussy adornment? Women of all ages and varying sizes can wear her pieces because the focus is on luxurious fabrics, exquisite tailoring and beautiful execution, not gimmicks and bells and whistles. Her skirts and dresses are never too short, her trousers are never too tight, most of her tops have sleeves – with Veronique Branquinho, the fit is always perfect. Her pieces are incredibly timeless and can be worn for just about any occasion. She designs knowing what matters most is the beauty of the woman wearing the garment.

I am utterly in love with Veronique Branquinho shoes and could honestly wear them ’til my dying days. They are unique, soooo comfortable and are the perfect punctuation mark on an outfit. I am loving these two pairs available on yoox at the moment – hint, hint husband (you can click to shop)??!!

As always, I would love to know if you know of Veronique Branquinho and appreciate her aesthetic as much as I do.  Do you own any of her pieces and how do you wear them?

You can buy Veronique Branquinho from yoox, thecornerOpening Ceremony and Farfetch.
